Sauromalus varius
One of ten piebald chuckwallas, Sauromalus varius, collected on San Esteban Island, Gulf of California, Mexico, on 25 June 1965, possessed several tumor-like in the conspicuous growths in the inferior cervical region. This condition in this endemic San Esteban Island species was first reported by Conti and Crowley (1939) in captive specimens at the San Diego Zoo. They found tumors in all twenty-five S. varius they examined, and concluded that the tumors were produced or stimulated by a bacterium they temporarily described as Bacterium sauromali.
