The validity of the Ctenosaura taxa acanthura, pectinata, and similis was tested using both morphologic and genetic data sets. The taxa were found to be significantly different from one another in six morphologic characters. Significant differences were also apparent in the RAPD-fingerprints resulting in average interspecific dissimilarity-values between 0.21-0.33. It is concluded that the three taxa examined are distinct natural groups, which deserve species status (Ctenosaura acanthura, C. pectinata and C. simils). A key for the identification of the species of this group is provided.
